'Stark Raven'

Acrylic and Oil on canvas, 90 x 90 cm

As someone whose first language isn’t English, I sometimes mix up words with amusing results—like saying “nukes and grannies” instead of “nooks and crannies.” This playfulness echoes in Stark Raven, where a simple shower handle transforms into an old-fashioned telephone. Peering from behind a curtain, surrounded by a forest hiding finger puppets, this artwork invites the viewer to see through a childlike lens while also awakening the inner detective. Yet, beneath the whimsy, a deeper truth lingers. A raven listens intently to an unseen conversation, its presence a silent witness to the unspoken. My daughter’s expression carries the weight of something unsaid, bridging the innocence of Peter Pan-like wonder with an unsettling reality. In a world where messages are distorted, misheard, or lost in translation——this piece explores the urgency of understanding the unseen forces that shape our narratives.
